Coal Distribution Constraints

Project Summary

Full Title: Future Impacts of Coal Distribution Constraints on Coal Cost
Project ID: 199
Principal Investigator: David McCollum
Keywords: Coal, hydrogen, costs

Purpose

Some important questions this analysis answers include the following: (1) will the nation’s rail-coal distribution system be able to handle future increases in coal demand that could result from traditional uses as well as coal-to-hydrogen production and (2) what is the trade off between building more efficient albeit more expensive integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plants versus modern pulverized coal (PC) plants if costly investments in coal transportation infrastructure can be avoided?

Category: Cross-Cutting, Energy Infrastructure
Objectives: Identify existing capacity and potential constraints within the coal distribution infrastructure; Identify the costs of alleviating these constraints under several growth scenarios for coal demand
Technologies Considered: Pulverized coal, integrated gasification combined cycle
Methodology/Approach: Discounted terms; Carload Waybill Sample
Models Used: Freight Analysis Framework 2; Monte Carlo
Outputs: Coal demand growth, costs
Timeframe Studied: 2006 - 2050
