HyWays-IPHE Comparison Between E3database, H2A and GREET

Project Summary

Full Title: HyWays-IPHE Methodological Comparison Between E3database, H2A and GREET Including a Comparison of Database and Respective Model Results
Project ID: 221
Principal Investigator: Christoph Stiller
Keywords: Models, steam methane reforming (SMR), coal, wind, natural gas

Purpose

HyWays-IPHE (International Partnership for the Hydrogen Economy) is a specific support action to assess and compare the development efforts for the European Hydrogen Energy Roadmap prepared by HyWays with international roadmapping or comparative activities of IPHE partner countries. In a first step, it aims at an in-depth assessment and comparison of the individual elements of the national/ regional strategies, modeling approaches and experiences in the EU and the U.S. This includes infrastructure analysis, stakeholder consultation processes, actor analysis, micro-, meso- and macro-economic modeling, Well-to-wheels (WTW)- analyses, cashflow analysis, interfaces and interaction between the different types of models used, basis for scenario development, etc.

Project Description

Type of Project: Analysis
Category: Hydrogen Fuel Pathways
Objectives: Identify the major differences between H2A, GREET and E3database and identify the need for further developments (models, data gaps and data harmonization).
Technologies Considered: Natural gas, steam methane reforming (SMR), biomass gasification, wind, coal
Methodology/Approach: Compare methodologies, assumptions and results of hydrogen energy pathway models
Models Used: E3database; H2A; HDSAM; GREET
Sensitivities Studied: Viewpoint for economic calculations; model layout; nuclear energy accounting; pipeline configuration
Timeframe Studied: 2007 - 2030
