Analysis of the Transition to Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles

Project Summary

Full Title: Analysis of the Transition to Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles & the Potential Hydrogen Energy Infrastructure Requirements
Project ID: 223
Principal Investigator: David L. Greene
Keywords: Infrastructure; fuel cell vehicles (FCV); hydrogen production; hydrogen delivery; costs

Purpose

Section 811 of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 calls for a report from the Secretary of Energy on measures to support the transition to a hydrogen economy. This study addresses production and deployment of hydrogen-fueled vehicles and the hydrogen production and delivery infrastructure needed to support those vehicles.

Project Description

Type of Project: Analysis
Category: Energy Infrastructure, Vehicle Options
Objectives: Assess the costs and impacts of achieving three hydrogen vehicle deployment scenarios.
Technologies Considered: Fuel cell vehicles (FCV); steam methane reforming; gasification; electrolysis; ethanol reforming; sulfur iodine thermochemical water splitting
Methodology/Approach: Scenario 1 – production of thousands of vehicles per year by 2015 and hundreds of thousands per year by 2019; Scenario 2 – production of thousands of FCVs by 2013 and hundreds of thousands by 2018; Scenario 3 – production of thousands of FCVs by 2013, hundreds of thousands by 2018 and millions by 2021
Models Used: HyTrans
Outputs: Vehicle deployment scenarios; policy options for supporting a hydrogen energy infrastructure; costs of implementing selected policy options
Sensitivities Studied: Technology shortfall cases for the fuel cell and storage system costs
Timeframe Studied: 2012 - 2025
