U.S. Department of Energy - Hydrogen Program

Education

Interest in hydrogen and fuel cell technology is increasing, but there remains a general lack of awareness of hydrogen as an energy alternative. The fundamental challenge to the Department of Energy's education efforts is the fact that the hydrogen economy is a revolutionary change from the world we know today. The goal of the DOE Hydrogen Education Program is to educate target audiences about the long-term benefits and near-term realities of hydrogen, fuel cell systems, and related infrastructure.

Hands-on activities, such as the fuel cell car race shown in the photo, allow students to delve into hydrogen and fuel cell technologies.Led by the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, the DOE Hydrogen Program is committed to educating the public, as well as key target audiences that play a role in achieving a hydrogen economy — teachers and students, state and local government representatives, safety and code officials, and potential commercial end-users — about hydrogen and fuel cell technologies.
