DOE H2A Production Analysis

The Hydrogen Analysis (H2A) models were developed to provide transparent reporting of process design assumptions and a consistent methodology for cost analysis for the production of hydrogen at central and forecourt (filling-station) facilities. Required input to the models include capital and operating costs for the hydrogen production process, fuel type and usage, and financial parameters such as the type of financing, plant life, and desired internal rate of return. The models include default values, developed by the H2A team, for many of the input parameters, but users may also enter their own values. The models use a standard discounted cash flow rate of return analysis methodology to determine the hydrogen selling cost for the desired internal rate of return.

The H2A Production Models and Case Studies have been updated!

Version 2.1 of the models includes changes to make them compatible with Excel 2007, update reference tables, and enhance usability. Several individual case studies were also changed to include more recent findings. All the case studies were updated to version 2.1 of the models.

The following changes were made to the H2A models (all models and case studies):

  • The upstream emissions tables for 2005 and 2020 timeframes were updated to match the upstream emissions tables published in HDSAM version 2.0 (Original source: GREET Model version 1.8, developed by Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, IL).
  • The GDP Implicit Deflator Price Indexes were updated (Source: GDP Implicit Price Deflator [Index, 2000=100], available from Short-Term Energy Outlook, Table 9a, August 12, 2008).
  • The feedstock physical properties table and all lower heating value calculations were updated (Hydrogen Analysis Resource Center: Lower and Higher Heating Values of Hydrogen and Fuels. Original source: GREET Transportation Fuel Cycle Analysis Model, GREET 1.8b, developed by Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, IL, released May 8, 2008).
  • Modifications for compatibility with Excel 2007.
  • Enhanced input and output report printing.
  • Modified CO2 process and upstream tax calculations for consistency with H2A standard format (central model and cases).
  • Changed default CO2 capture efficiency to 90% based on literature review (central model and cases). This change did not affect any individual case studies.
  • Corrected error in result percentage calculations (forecourt model and cases).

The following changes were made to individual case studies. (See the case study for details):

  • Forecourt electrolysis current and future cases (version 2.1.2) — Reduced cooling water usage based on communication with the vendor and NREL modeling.
  • Forecourt ethanol reforming current and future cases (version 2.1.2) — Added capital and installation costs for ethanol storage tanks based on vendor bid.
  • Central biomass reforming current and future cases (version 2.1.2) — Removed hydrogen compression capital and operating costs for consistency with H2A standard assumptions.

The H2A Production Model also includes:

Enhanced usability

  • Clarified definitions, assumptions, and default values
  • Consolidated and simplified input fields

New functionality
