Macro-System Model

The Macro-System Model (MSM) enables analysts to perform cross-cutting analyses and simulations related to hydrogen technologies and systems. This model supports U.S. Department of Energy decisions regarding programmatic investments, focus of funding, and research milestones.

Check out Hydrogen Pathways for an example of how the MSM provides a clearer understanding of costs, energy use, and emissions for hydrogen fuel cell options.

Benefits

The MSM simulates cost, energy use, and emissions of the entire hydrogen system (including feedstock, conversion, infrastructure, and vehicles). This model:

  • Performs rapid, cross-cutting analysis through a single model by linking existing applicable models.
  • Improves consistency of technology representation.
  • Allows for consistent use of hydrogen models without requiring all users to be experts in all models.
Circle graphic depicting models, a database, and risk analysis tools connected to the macro system model. The macro system model is the hub. From it radiates the following models and databases: those completed before version 1.3 are H2A Delivery, H2A Production, Hydrogen Analysis Resource Center (Database), Risk Analysis (@risk, DAKOTA), GREET 1 (Well-to-Wheel Emissions), GREET 2; those in version 1.3 are HyDRA (Spatial Tool), HyPRO (Pathways Progression); those underway are cost-per-mile tool and fuel cell power model.

The MSM links hydrogen models, a database, and analysis tools to enable consistent assumptions and analysis of hydrogen technologies.

Model Description

Macro-System Model Version 1.3 operates as a central hub to guarantee consistency in simulations that involve multiple models. It links models, a database, and analysis tools.
