Roadmaps & Vision Documents

These roadmaps and vision documents provide direction for the DOE Hydrogen Program. Some of the following documents are available as Adobe Acrobat PDFs. Download Adobe Reader.

The Hydrogen Posture Plan (PDF 2.5 MB), published in December 2006, outlines activities under the Hydrogen Fuel Initiative, both at the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Department of Transportation. It focuses on the activities, milestones, and deliverables DOE plans to pursue to support America's shift to a hydrogen-based transportation energy system. The plan integrates research, development, and demonstration activities from the DOE renewable, nuclear, fossil, and science offices. It identifies milestones for technology development over the next decade, leading up to a technology readiness milestone in 2015. The plan points out that the use of hydrogen as an energy carrier can enhance energy security while reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

The National Hydrogen Energy Roadmap (PDF 2 MB) was unveiled by the Secretary of Energy, Spencer Abraham, November 12, 2002. The Roadmap provides a blueprint for the coordinated, long-term, public and private efforts required for hydrogen energy development.

A National Vision of America's Transition to a Hydrogen Economy—to 2030 and Beyond (PDF 1.1 MB) was published in February 2002 as a result of the Hydrogen Vision Meeting. This document summarizes the potential role for hydrogen systems in America's energy future, outlining the common vision of the hydrogen economy.
